What we see in Laidley

Laidley's a town that wears its age well, but that age shows up pretty quickly once you start poking around the wiring. Most of these homes along the main street and out toward the creek were built before World War Two, and a lot of them haven't had anyone properly look at the electrics since. You pull up to a classic Queenslander and it's beautiful — timber floors, high ceilings, the whole deal — but crack open the meter box and you're often looking at ceramic fuses that belong in a museum, not a lived-in home.

The flooding history around Laidley Creek catches people off guard. Homeowners sometimes don't realise how far water damage travels through a wall cavity or under a subfloor. I've been to places where the lounge room looked fine, but the wiring underneath had been sitting damp for years. That's when things get serious.

The farming properties on the outskirts have their own set of issues — long cable runs, old shed wiring done decades ago by whoever was handy at the time. Good people, but not always licensed. You take nothing for granted out here.
